RESUMO

Demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA) contains bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), hence is osteoinductive. Autologous platelet concentrates exhibit a higher quantity of growth factors. Both these biomaterials aid in bone regeneration when placed in three-wall intrabony defects. However, their efficacy when used alone and in conjugation is not clear. Aim: To assess clinical and radiographic efficacy of injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) with microsurgical access flap in the treatment of three-wall intrabony defects in chronic periodontitis patients. Methods: Thirty sites with three-wall intrabony defects were randomly assigned to control and test group by computer generated method. The test group obtained i-PRF mixed with DFDBA while the control group received only DFDBA. Clinical parameters such as site-specific Plaque index (PI), Radiographic intrabony defect depth (IBDD), modified- Sulcular bleeding index (mSBI), Clinical attachment level (CAL), and Probing pocket depth (PPD) were measured at baseline, three and six months. Results: Intragroup comparison within the control group and test group exhibited statistically highly significant variation of mean PI, mSBI, PPD, CAL, and IBDD score from baseline to 3 months and from 3-6 months (p<0.001). However, intergroup comparison demonstrated no statistically significant variation of mean IBDD at all 3 intervals (p>0.05). Conclusion: i-PRF combined with DFDBA enhanced the radiographic and clinical parameters as opposed to DFDBA alone. The role of i-PRF is promising in its capacity for easy obtainability and increased potential to aid in regeneration

INTRODUCTION: Wrinkles commonly manifest in various areas of the face as individuals age. This study aimed to assess the association between facial wrinkles and different facial forms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observational, prospective study was conducted on the facial photographs of 400 subjects aged 40-60 years, which were divided into four groups of 100 subjects each: Group 1, square facial form; Group 2, ovoid facial form; Group 3, square tapered facial form; and Group 4, tapered facial form. All groups had almost equal distributions of males and females. Six types of facial wrinkles were studied, namely, forehead, glabellar, canthal, nasolabial, wrinkles at the corner of the mouth, and perioral wrinkles. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for intergroup comparison, and an independent Student's t-test was used to assess gender differences in facial wrinkles. RESULTS: Significant gender differences were observed for forehead wrinkles in Groups 1 and 3, canthal wrinkles in Groups 1 and 2, and right perioral wrinkles in Group 1 (p<0.05). There were non-significant gender differences between right and left-side facial wrinkles (p>0.05). Significant differences between the groups were observed for all facial wrinkles between the right and left sides of the face (p<0.05). There was a significant difference between the groups for the presence of glabellar, corner of the mouth, and perioral wrinkles, with the presence of higher wrinkles in ovoid and tapered facial forms compared to square and square tapered facial forms (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Females had more facial wrinkles than males, predominantly in the forehead region. The least prominent wrinkles were observed in the perioral region of the face. Glabellar, corner of the mouth, and perioral wrinkles were predominantly observed in ovoid and tapered facial forms.

INTRODUCTION: Assessing bone condition holds significant value in the diagnosis, treatment planning, and prognosing the periodontal disease; its importance is undeniable. The main aim of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy of alveolar bone measurements due to periodontal disease using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), by comparing with surgical measurements, considered as the gold standard. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study included a sample of 40 individuals diagnosed with chronic periodontitis who required periodontal surgery. A total of 202 sites were assessed for vertical and horizontal bone loss in the anterior (76 sites) and posterior (126 sites) teeth. Bone loss was measured using CBCT and a UNC 15 periodontal probe during the surgical intervention, and then compared. The statistical analysis involved employing a Student's t-test to compare measurements. Unpaired t-tests and correlation analyses were conducted using Pearson's correlation coefficient test. To establish statistical significance, a threshold of p<0.05 was considered appropriate. RESULTS: The statistical analysis carried out on the mean values of CBCT and direct surgical measurements for vertical bone loss demonstrated a significant difference (p<0.01). However, the values obtained for horizontal bone loss did not display statistical significance. A strong correlation of 0.94-0.99 existed between surgical and CBCT measurements. A statistically significant distinction was observed between the two methods in measuring bone loss at the distal and palatal sites of the anterior teeth. CONCLUSION: Both CBCT and direct surgical measurement exhibit comparable accuracy potential in assessing alveolar bone loss. CBCT provides an accessibility advantage by enhancing visual access to challenging sites during surgical interventions, including palatal and distal areas of the teeth.
